The Arachnid - Gentle Monster Haus Nowhere Shenzhen

젠틀몬스터는 브랜드 아이덴티티를 리테일 공간 자체로 확장해온 브랜드다. 서울과 상하이에 이어 2024년 9월, 선전 MixC World에 세 번째 HAUS NOWHERE가 문을 열었다. 약 6,914㎡, 3개 층에 걸쳐 펼쳐지는 이 공간의 주제는 "INSECT KINGDOM" — 거인과 곤충, 동물 사이의 1만 년에 걸친 관계를 상상한 픽션 세계관이다. 쇼핑 공간이 아닌 하나의 서사로 기획된 이 프로젝트에서 공간 전체는 복수의 팀이 제작한 대형 조형물들로 채워졌고, Team Lorem은 그 세계관의 핵심 오브제 중 하나인 The Arachnid — 거미를 형상화한 대형 패브릭 조형물 — 의 제작에 참여했다.

The Arachnid는 공간 1층, 곤충 왕국의 서사가 시작되는 첫 번째 챕터에 자리한 시그니처 조형물이다. 복수의 팀이 각자의 조각품을 담당하는 협업 구조 안에서 Team Lorem은 Arachnid 파트의 제작 전 과정을 맡았다. 팔을 펼친 거미의 실루엣을 실물 크기로 옮긴 이 오브제는 공간에 처음 발을 들인 방문객이 마주하는 이미지 중 하나이며, 공간 전체가 담고 있는 비현실적이고 이질적인 무드를 압축적으로 전달한다.

구조는 철골 프레임으로 시작했다. 여덟 개의 다리와 몸통에 해당하는 형태를 금속 골격으로 먼저 잡고, 그 위에 패브릭과 솜을 덮어 볼륨을 만들어갔다. 흰색 면 소재와 실버 이리데센트 소재를 혼합해 사용했고, 주름을 살린 천과 솜으로 관절마다 질감의 차이를 두었다. 스테인리스 스틸 부품이 다리 끝과 중심부를 마감하면서 오브제 전체에 구조적 긴장감을 더했다. 단단한 금속 뼈대 위에 부드러운 패브릭이 얹히는 이 조합은 이 조형물이 가진 핵심적인 시각적 장력으로, 곤충 특유의 이질감과 묘한 우아함을 동시에 불러온다.

제작은 국내 작업실에서 파트별 사전 작업을 마친 후 현장 설치로 이어졌다. 각 파트의 프레임을 완성하고 패브릭 커버링과 솜 채움을 진행한 뒤, 부품 단위로 분리해 운반 후 현장에서 재조립하는 방식을 택했다. 대형 실내 설치 조형물의 특성상 현장에서의 구조적 안정성 확보와 미세 조정이 공정의 핵심이었다. 거울 바닥 위에 최종 설치된 조형물은 반사면까지 활용되면서 시각적 존재감이 확장됐고, 블루 카펫과 미러 플로어 위에 놓인 The Arachnid는 공간 안에서 스스로의 무게 중심을 갖는 독립적인 오브제가 되었다.

HAUS NOWHERE SHENZHEN은 오픈 당일 2만 명 이상의 방문객을 맞이했다. The Arachnid 앞에서 사진을 남기는 방문객들의 모습은 이 조형물이 전시물을 넘어 브랜드 경험 공간의 포토 스팟이자 시각적 앵커로 작동하고 있음을 보여줬다. 잘 만들어진 공간 조형물이 브랜드와 방문객 사이의 기억할 만한 접점이 된다는 것 — Team Lorem이 이 프로젝트를 통해 다시 한번 확인한 방향이다.

Gentle Monster has long transformed its retail environments into immersive world-building experiences. Following launches in Seoul and Shanghai, the third HAUS NOWHERE opened at Shenzhen's MixC World in September 2024. Spanning approximately 6,914 square meters across three floors, the space unfolds under the theme "INSECT KINGDOM" — a fictional saga exploring the 10,000-year relationship between colossal humans, beasts, and insectoids. Rather than a conventional shopping destination, the project operates as a single large-scale spatial narrative, populated by multiple sculptural works fabricated by independent studios. Team Lorem contributed to this world as the studio behind The Arachnid: a monumental fabric spider sculpture anchoring the first chapter of the Insect Kingdom story.

The Arachnid was positioned at the threshold of the narrative, making it among the first sculptural encounters for visitors entering the space. Developed within a multi-team collaboration structure — each studio responsible for a distinct sculptural piece — Team Lorem took full ownership of The Arachnid's fabrication from structural engineering through to surface finishing. The figure captures the splayed silhouette of a spider at monumental scale, communicating the otherworldly, uncanny atmosphere that defines the entire HAUS NOWHERE experience.

Construction began with a steel frame. Eight legs and a central body were first formed in metal, establishing the structural skeleton of the creature. Over this armature, fabric and cotton padding were layered to build volume and texture. A combination of white cotton, silver iridescent textile, and ruched fabric introduced deliberate textural variation across each joint and limb segment. Stainless steel hardware finished the extremities and central column, adding structural tension to the whole. The pairing of rigid metal and soft textile is the essential visual proposition of the piece — simultaneously mechanical and organic, strange and refined, a material language fitting for a creature that rules an imagined kingdom.

Fabrication was completed at Team Lorem's studio in Korea before transportation and on-site assembly in Shenzhen. The work was built in discrete structural sections — each part independently finished, then disassembled for transit and reassembled on location. Ensuring structural stability and precision alignment on-site was critical given the scale of the work and the demands of a high-traffic retail environment. Installed on a mirrored floor platform surrounded by a deep blue carpet, the finished sculpture gained an additional dimension through its reflection below, extending its spatial presence further than its physical footprint. The Arachnid stands as a self-contained object — one that holds its own weight and its own presence within the space.
