강원도 춘천 아트월

춘천에 위치한 한 레스토랑의 벽면을 위한 석부조 아트월 프로젝트다. 클라이언트는 매장 내부의 어두운 톤의 벽면에 강원도의 지형을 형상화한 입체 오브제를 설치하고자 했다. 강원도 각 시·군의 경계를 부조로 구현해 지역의 정체성을 공간 안에 물성으로 담아내는 작업이었다. 약 3m × 3m 규모의 벽면 조형물로, 단순한 장식이 아니라 공간의 성격을 규정하는 하나의 환경 조형물로 기능하도록 기획되었다.

제작은 3D 모델링에서 시작되었다. 강원도의 실제 지형 데이터를 기반으로 각 시·군의 윤곽과 고저차를 디지털 환경에서 먼저 설계했다. 평면적인 지도를 입체 부조로 전환하는 과정에서 각 영역 사이의 단차와 표면 질감을 세밀하게 조정했고, 벽면에 걸렸을 때의 시각적 균형과 조명 아래에서 드러날 음영까지 고려하여 모델링을 완성했다.

디지털 모델을 실물로 전환하기 위해 MDF 합판을 강원도 윤곽 형태로 절단했다. 합판 표면 위에 빨간 선으로 각 시·군의 경계와 지형 흐름을 표기한 뒤, 이를 시멘트 시공의 가이드라인으로 활용했다. MDF 합판은 부조의 골격이자 벽면 고정을 위한 구조체 역할을 동시에 수행하도록 설계되었다.

현장에서의 시멘트 시공은 이 프로젝트의 핵심 공정이었다. MDF 합판을 벽면에 고정한 뒤, 주변을 비닐과 마스킹으로 보호하고 시멘트를 직접 올려가며 지형의 높낮이와 암석의 질감을 손으로 만들어냈다. 시멘트가 굳어가는 시간과 싸우며 한 겹씩 쌓아 올린 표면은 자연석의 거친 결과 갈라진 암반의 느낌을 의도적으로 재현한 것이다. 도면 위의 디지털 형상을 물리적 부조로 옮기는 이 과정에서 작업자의 감각과 판단이 조형의 완성도를 좌우했다.

시멘트 경화 후 도색 단계에서는 검은 벽면과의 조화를 고려하여 어두운 석재 톤으로 마감했다. 조명이 부조의 요철을 따라 그림자를 만들어내면서, 평면 벽에 깊이와 무게감이 생겨났다. 3D 모델링부터 MDF 가공, 시멘트 조형, 도색, 현장 설치까지 Team Lorem이 전 과정을 담당했다. 디지털 설계와 수작업 조형을 결합한 이 아트월은 공간에 장소 특정적인 정체성을 부여하는 벽면 조형물로 완성되었다.

This project involved the fabrication and installation of a large-scale stone relief artwall for a restaurant in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. The client envisioned a sculptural wall piece that would translate the topography of Gangwon-do Province into a dimensional relief, embedding regional identity directly into the spatial experience of the venue. Measuring approximately 3m × 3m, the relief was designed not as mere decoration but as an environmental sculpture that defines the character of the dark-toned interior wall it occupies.

The process began with 3D modeling. Using actual geographical data of Gangwon-do, Team Lorem digitally sculpted the contours and elevation differences of each municipal district. The transition from flat cartography to dimensional relief required careful calibration of depth variations and surface texture, with particular attention to visual balance on the wall and the interplay of shadow under directional lighting.

To translate the digital model into physical form, MDF boards were cut to the precise silhouette of Gangwon-do. Red boundary lines marking each district and topographical flow were drawn onto the board surface, serving as guidelines for the subsequent cement application. The MDF substrate functioned both as the structural skeleton of the relief and as the mounting framework for wall installation.

On-site cement application was the critical phase of this project. After securing the MDF structure to the wall and masking the surrounding area with plastic sheeting, Team Lorem hand-applied cement layer by layer, building up the terrain's ridges and valleys while deliberately recreating the rough texture of natural rock and cracked stone. Working against the material's curing time, each layer demanded precise judgment from the fabricator, as the tactile decisions made during this stage ultimately determined the sculptural quality of the finished piece.

Following the curing process, the relief was finished in a dark stone tone chosen to harmonize with the black wall surface. Under directional lighting, shadows trace the contours and crevices of the relief, lending the flat wall a sense of geological depth and physical weight. Team Lorem managed the entire production pipeline, from 3D modeling and MDF fabrication through cement sculpting, painting, and on-site installation. By combining digital design with hands-on sculptural craft, this bespoke artwall gives the space a site-specific identity rooted in the landscape of Gangwon-do.
