Gold Cube by Bottega veneta

2022년 겨울, 갤러리아 명품관 EAST 광장에는 보테가 베네타와 협업한 크리스마스 조형물이 들어섰다. 갤러리아 명품관은 2016년 불가리를 시작으로 까르띠에, 샤넬, 루이비통, 펜디, 디올 등 해마다 글로벌 럭셔리 브랜드와 함께 크리스마스 장식을 선보이며 서울을 대표하는 연말 명소로 자리잡은 곳이다. 2022년의 파트너는 보테가 베네타였다. 크리에이티브 디렉터 마티유 블라지(Matthieu Blazy)가 처음 선보인 Winter 2022 컬렉션의 골드 톤과 인트레치아토 패턴에서 영감을 받은 이 프로젝트는, 높이 약 14미터의 생목 구상나무 트리를 중심으로 황금빛 큐브가 겹겹이 쌓인 대형 조형물로 구성되었다. Team Lorem은 이 조형물의 제작과 현장 설치를 담당했다.

조형물의 핵심은 다양한 크기의 큐브를 적층하여 트리 하단부에 산을 쌓듯 배치하는 구조였다. 각 큐브의 본체는 MDF와 합판으로 제작했다. 견고한 구조를 확보하면서도 운반과 현장 조립이 가능한 크기로 분할 제작하는 것이 관건이었다. 완성된 큐브는 수십 개에 달했고, 현장에서 설계도에 따라 하나씩 적층하며 전체 형태를 완성해 나갔다.

큐브 표면의 마감은 금박 시트를 사용했다. 매끈하게 붙이는 것이 아니라, 종이를 의도적으로 구겨 접착하는 방식을 택해 빛을 받을 때 불규칙한 반사가 일어나도록 했다. 이 거친 질감이 보테가 베네타 Winter 2022 컬렉션의 골드 스터드 디테일과 조응하며, 평면적인 금색이 아닌 입체적이고 역동적인 표면을 만들어냈다. 금박 시트는 롤 형태로 입고되어 각 큐브의 크기에 맞게 재단한 뒤 수작업으로 접착했다.

작업장에서의 제작 과정은 상당한 규모로 진행되었다. MDF 큐브 본체 위에 금박 시트를 한 면씩 구겨 붙이는 작업은 전적으로 수작업이었다. 큐브마다 면적이 다르고, 구김의 정도와 방향에 따라 최종 표면의 인상이 달라지기 때문에 일정한 밀도와 리듬감을 유지하는 데 세심한 주의가 필요했다. 완성된 큐브에는 현장 배치 순서에 따라 번호를 매겨 운반과 설치의 효율을 확보했다.

현장 설치는 갤러리아 명품관 EAST 광장에서 이루어졌다. 미리 계획된 적층 도면에 따라 큐브를 하나씩 올려 트리 하단을 감싸는 피라미드형 구조를 완성했다. 크리스마스 트리 자체는 Team Lorem의 작업 범위에 포함되지 않았으며, 큐브 조형물의 제작과 설치가 이번 프로젝트에서 Team Lorem이 수행한 영역이다. 완성된 조형물은 보테가 베네타의 로고 사이니지, 트리 조명과 어우러져 압구정 일대의 겨울 밤을 황금빛으로 물들였다.

In the winter of 2022, a collaborative Christmas installation between Galleria Department Store and Bottega Veneta appeared at the EAST plaza of the Galleria luxury wing in Apgujeong. Since 2016, the Galleria has partnered with global luxury brands including Bulgari, Cartier, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Dior to present annual Christmas displays, establishing the plaza as one of Seoul's most iconic holiday landmarks. The 2022 edition was created in partnership with Bottega Veneta, drawing inspiration from the gold tones and Intrecciato pattern of Creative Director Matthieu Blazy's inaugural Winter 2022 collection. Centered around a roughly 14-meter live Korean fir tree, the installation featured a large-scale sculpture of gold cubes stacked in layered formation at the tree's base. Team Lorem was responsible for the fabrication and on-site installation of the cube sculpture.

The core of the sculpture consisted of cubes in varying dimensions, stacked to form a mountainous structure wrapping the base of the tree. Each cube body was built from MDF and plywood, engineered for structural integrity while remaining divisible into manageable sections for transport and on-site assembly. Dozens of finished cubes were produced, then systematically positioned at the site according to a predetermined stacking plan.

The surface finish was achieved using gold foil sheets. Rather than applying the material smoothly, the sheets were intentionally crumpled before being adhered to each cube face, producing irregular reflections when struck by light. This rough, textured quality echoed the gold stud details from Bottega Veneta's Winter 2022 collection, transforming a flat gold tone into something sculptural and dynamic. The foil arrived in rolls, was cut to size for each cube, and hand-applied panel by panel.

Workshop fabrication was a substantial undertaking. Crumpling and adhering the gold foil sheets onto each MDF cube was an entirely manual process. Because every cube varied in surface area, and the impression of the final texture shifted depending on the degree and direction of each crumple, maintaining consistent density and visual rhythm across all units demanded close attention. Completed cubes were numbered according to their placement sequence to streamline transport and installation logistics.

On-site installation took place at the Galleria EAST plaza. Following the pre-planned stacking layout, each cube was placed one by one to build a pyramidal formation encasing the base of the tree. The Christmas tree itself was outside Team Lorem's scope of work; the studio's contribution was confined to the fabrication and installation of the gold cube sculpture. Once completed, the installation — paired with Bottega Veneta's illuminated logo signage and the tree's warm lighting — transformed the Apgujeong streetscape into a golden winter tableau.
